What follows is an example of what I do, although I will cater my workshops to the particular needs of the class, depending on what is desired, and on the grade level. I can focus on the art or the writing, however I often do both, since they are so closely linked in my own books.
Presentation: (example)
I discuss the development of character and story by using Alicia from ALICIA HAS A BAD DAY. I bring in my early drafts of both art and text to emphasize the importance of both elements and to show the process of revision. I describe the publishing process by showing the forms the book went through from a black-and-white dummy layout, to galleys, to the finished full-color hardcover book. I also show some of my failed stories and explain why they failed. I emphasize the importance of strong character and plot by laying out my book page by page. I also explain how a picture book is put together; the 32 page layout and various design elements that all work together to make a good story flow.
I illustrate the process of my art by drawing Alicia and Neptune on large paper. I show her with different expressions and explain how the shape of a line can evoke a certain mood. I ask for class participation in drawing Alicia on different types of days. This works best with younger grades, though I notice the older grades also enjoy it.
I talk about my life as a reader, writer, and illustrator by bringing in copies of books I made when I was a child. I discuss the relation of the text to the illustrations and inspire the students to make their own stories into a book. In longer workshops I can help with this process.
Teacher In-Service Instruction:
Includes much of the above. I explain the 32-page format of a picture book and describe the process of publishing. I discuss ways to encourage children to write and how to generate ideas while also teaching technique. I can also lecture on the past and present history of the field.
